Pakistan Threatens to Withdraw from Bilateral Pacts After India Suspends Key Treaty, Closes Border
Islamabad – Pakistan on Thursday warned it could suspend all bilateral agreements with India, including the 1972 Simla Agreement, in a retaliatory measure following India’s decision to halt its participation in the Indus Water Treaty and close the land border between the two countries.
The move signals a sharp deterioration in relations between the nuclear-armed neighbors, as diplomatic and strategic tensions rise.
The Simla Agreement, signed in the aftermath of the 1971 war that led to the creation of Bangladesh, has served as a cornerstone for maintaining dialogue and peace efforts between the two nations. Its potential suspension could mark a significant shift in the fragile status quo of South Asian geopolitics.
